Amai Joins UK Government Trade Mission to Malaysia

Amai was invited by the UK Government to join their official trade mission to Malaysia.

We were honoured to share our unique model for combating the 'brain drain' by enabling Malaysian Family Medicine Specialists to access NHS opportunities remotely, benefitting both the UK and Malaysian health systems.

We allow Malaysian Family Medicine Specialists to work for the NHS remotely from Malaysia. This means they don’t have to move abroad and can continue to contribute to the Malaysian health care system.

We are proud to be the only company approved by the UK NHS to deliver this service.

Highlights from the Trade Mission

Joining a select group of UK health care companies on the trade mission, we learned a lot. A couple of interesting insights from the trip:

  • We met with the Ministry of Health regarding chronic disease management in primary care. They are experimenting with new compensation models that incentivise continuity of care for chronic patients. There is a lot the UK government can learn here.
  • Health tourism is a major export industry in Malaysia. We attended the MIH Mega Health conference, where we played with Da Vinci Robots (Malaysia has the most per capita in ASEAN!). The CEO of Sunway Medical Group, Dr. Lo Kwai Siong, gave us a tour of the world class facilities at Sunway Medical Centre, which caters for patients from around the world.
  • We noticed that even though the NHS and Malaysian health systems are different, the problems are the same: the cost of quality medical treatment and the difficulty of retaining skilled medical talent, given international opportunities.

We are growing

We have delivered 1000s of hours of patient care, and are now working with some of the largest primary care providers in the NHS, including the Hurley Group, London's biggest chain of GP practices.

This growth means we have been able to offer more opportunities to Family Medicine Specialists in Malaysia. Our model offers international exposure and income from the comfort of home. All Amai doctors work part time for us. This means they can continue to see Malaysian patients.

When we are in Kuala Lumpur, it is always great to catch up with the team. Below is a photo of the meal we hosted at the Majestic Hotel (it also happened to be my birthday).
